Our CEO talks about it, as do all other leadership levels in the organization. Being a health care company, one of the other ways they embed a culture of caring is by bringing in patients who have benefitted from our products to talk to employees. It makes you connect your inanimate widget to a person and understand that the work you do is really important.
USAA is my insurance company. Their clients are active and retired members of the U.S. military and their families. (I can buy USAA because my ex-husband was military and we had USAA as a married couple.) It’s a great insurance company. And when I heard this, I liked them even more: To connect their employees to their mission of serving the military, they have new employees eat MREs (Meals Ready to Eat) to get a taste for life on the front lines. They also get to try on military backpacks and Kevlar vests to better to appreciate the physical burdens soldiers carry with them. Then they read letters home from soldiers to families, and letters from families to soldiers. I’m sure they have written values too, but these type of activities leave a deeper imprint.
