I don’t understand much about how the government governs agriculture – the concept of paying farmers to not farm for one. I’m getting to know a few farmers in the area and one recently told me he has not farmed his land in 30 years; they pay him not to. But he still gets the farm tax subsidy. Yesterday there was a story about a farmer in Michigan who grows about 30 acres of cherries. This year he is shaking cherries out of his trees and leaving them to rot on the ground. “We have to dump 14% of our tart cherry crop -- why? So we can allow the import of 200 million pounds of cherries from overseas!” He says it’s an attempt to prop up the price of cherries and apparently this is something cherry farmers agreed to. But when you hear this, don’t you wish there were another option – like taking them to food banks?
There must be a way to work that out. What a shame. Low income people rarely have good diets because of the cost of fresh produce. We have hungry people and we are letting food rot. It’s the pits. Cherry pits to be exact.
