And then I gave her the thumbnail sketch of Despicable Me; she was probably glad most of that was on TV screens during the long line. When we left the Despicable Me attraction we came upon some characters from that movie. I ran right over to Vector, the evil rival of Gru and I heard this whole movie conversation in my mind:
Agnes: Why are you wearing your pajamas?
Vector: [sputters] These aren't pajamas! It's a warm-up suit.
Edith: What are you warming up for?
Vector: Stuff.
Margo: What sort of stuff?
Vector: Super-cool stuff you wouldn't understand.
Agnes: Like sleeping?
Vector: THEY ARE NOT PAJAMAS!
Have you ever noticed that the movie line thing is more of a guy thing than a girl thing? One of my stepsons can see a movie like once and walk out quoting lines. What is it about dropping movie lines into conversations anyway? Is it just a way of being cool? Demonstrating you are culturally literate? I don't think I quote them much, but there are a few favorites. "I carried a watermelon" is from Dirty Dancing and Babe says it to Johnny Castle when he challenges her being at the party and she's all awkward and nervous. I've often thought of using that line at business functions where I feel awkward; I wonder how many people would laugh and get it. It's either a great ice-breaker or a great way to enhance that awkward feeling.
My other favorite line is from Pretty Woman. Edward meets Vivian in a hotel lounge to fly her to San Francisco for the opera. They both look hot and she gushes, "If I forget to tell you later, I had a great time."
