When I go out for a bike ride on a well-travelled path, I say, “Morning!” to everyone I go by. I’d say at least 50% of the people don’t even respond. I’m passing someone in the middle of the woods, and there’s nobody else within sight… I say it loudly…and still, people look away. I find it very surprising.
Manners are learned. My parents taught me simple courtesies that demonstrate respect for others. I guess I got taught them very young because they are like muscle-memory – they just appear right on cue without thought.
