Driving down Rt. 78 today, I passed a woman screaming out her window at somebody, red in the face, and shaking her fist. NJ traffic can get the best of anyone. I didn’t see the offense, so it was sort of funny watching this woman all contorted in anger. I’m sure she let loose with a long string of obscenities. I don’t especially want to be around people like that, but I have a perverse admiration for a) screamers and b) people who can curse for a solid two minutes without repeating themselves. I don’t scream, except at a football game. It hurts my throat. And I run out of good things to scream very quickly. My vocabulary of insulting, taunting, angry words was built in my Looney Tunes years.
A guy cuts me off? – Whatta ingnoramus!. A tailgater flashing their lights? – Ya idjit! I just don’t have a large volume of swear words available. Sure, I’ve heard them all and used most, but in the car, it’s more like talking to myself: You nimrod! You’re dethpicable! My mother used to tell me, “Don’t swear; it’s not very feminine.” That – and fear of my Dad – kept me from swearing when most kids were trying it out. My parents didn’t swear much; I heard “damn” growing up, but not much else. In college, I hung out with people like me, who were raised not using “bad words”.
I recommend cartoon swearing – it’s more entertaining, and it helps defuse some of the stress of the situation.
