The day after Labor Day...no more hitting the snooze button for that extra 10 minutes because my summer traffic vacation is officially over. Rutgers students have been back for about two weeks, but most schools in NJ resume the day after Labor Day. And traffic wasted no time at all assuming its fall/winter posture. I generally get on Route 78 at about 5:15 a.m., a time selected to make my commute less painful as well as to create a consistent gym routine. Didn't quite work out that way this morning. My 20 mile ride to Route 287 was interrupted when Rt. 78 was completely shut down in both directions so they could medevac out a driver who flipped over his dump truck. That's a big deal.
It's not very often one gets to see a dump truck "wheels up", so naturally we all needed to slow down and have a good look at that. It was grotesquely captivating. But this brings me to my point. In England, when a bad traffic accident occurs, a truck with portable opaque screens is deployed right along with other emergency vehicles. The accident scene is quickly hidden behind the screens. Nothing to look at then, traffic doesn't get quite as tangled up. It's a brilliant idea.
