I love the Flemington Turkey Trot because it’s in my hometown. It doesn’t pass the house I grew up in, but I know all the streets in this pretty, historic town. The race begins at the Flemington Court House – famous because that’s where Bruno Hauptman was tried and convicted for the abduction and murder of Charles Lindberg’s baby. I have run the race nearly every year since about 1996 and I have a collection of the ugliest race t-shirts to prove it. A sampling is shown in this photo. They are so ugly, they are not even worthy of a t-shirt quilt. And offering them in a pretty pink didn't doesn't improve them. Instead, they are my yard-work shirts. Next year is the 25th year of the race; perhaps they could celebrate with a new artist. I know everyone has different taste in ‘art’, but tell me you don’t think these Turkey Trot shirts are ugly too!
Runners pay for race shirts as part of their registration fee. And it’s nice to have a “look-what-I-did” shirt. I suppose I could just run for the love of running…yeah, no. I need incentive. And proof. Run organizations do it to raise money. The less money spent on t-shirts, cops and timing chips, the more money the organization gets. So the quality of race shirts varies a lot. Mostly I get a “Large” because they shrink insanely. But once in a while, a large is a huge miscalculation. The annual race with the best t-shirts around here is the Lehigh Valley Women’s’ 5K Classic – a breast cancer walk.
I recently learned that you can save all your race numbers and send them in to a company that will stitch them all together into a gym bag. I don’t know, I think there’s a certain panache to the random way mine are spread all over the shop in my basement.
