Election Day at last. Who’s not happy about that? I went on a news blackout for the day. I think I finally made up my mind about noon, and voted this evening. I had such a difficult time making up my mind, as I know so many Americans did. I could only console myself with the notion that NJ really isn’t a state that counts too much; we’re never a swing state, so my vote wouldn’t count much. In the end, I will tell you just this…I made my vote based on the Supreme Court. There is already one seat open and three justices are 78 or older. The next President could conceivably name four justices and I think the Supreme Court has more long-term influence over the country than either of the bad choices America had for President. So I picked the candidate I thought most favorable to the kind of Supreme Court I’d like to see. It’s an imperfect rationale, just like the imperfect choices before us.
I will check the news before bed to see what outcome the early returns are indicating. Either way, I will sleep fine. But tomorrow morning, there should be a lot of people moving out of the country – you know, all those people who felt such deep disgust about one candidate that they vowed to leave if their candidate didn’t win. I’ve always hated people who say this and would gladly help them buy a ticket to go. They are like ungrateful children who have been spoiled with so much that they take it for granted. I dislike a cavalier attitude toward US citizenship – people not knowing what it means to be in this great country. Surely they’ve heard about all the immigrants trying to come into the US. Do they ever ask “why?” or what they are leaving? Of course, no-one will actually leave.
Tick, tock; tick, tock…the polls are gradually closing from East to West. Tomorrow we will have new problems, but Americans will adjust in time. I wish I could be more excited.
