For one, I don’t like cities much to begin with and today’s cruise ships are like small, floating cities, often accommodating 4,000-6,000 passengers. Those beautiful shots of the pools with all the lounge chairs lined up? You’re about five inches away from your neighbors. That’s even worse than going to the Jersey Shore. If it sounds like I don’t like people, well, I think when it comes to vacations that’s pretty true. I gravitate to less populated adventures (a kayak with 6 other people in the Everglades for example). Cruise ships don’t stop at the nicest places either. I’ve been to many islands and all the ‘good stuff’ is nowhere near the port. When you get off the ships, you have T-shirt and trinket shops primarily and often not enough time to go deeper into the island.
Some people love to cruise for the food and the buffets. I don’t have much control at a buffet so I try to avoid places with “easy food”. And norovirus epidemics on ships are a little too common. Still, there is one cruise I might actually take someday, and that would be to Alaska on a smaller ship. I know many people who have done this who say it’s a must-do way to see Alaska’s beauty. Unless I can find an outfitter with a bush plane, tents and a bazooka gun for the bears.
Extra points today for anyone who knows why I gave this blog that title!
