Do you get daily emails from Amazon? They predict things you might want to buy next based on an algorithm of your past browsing and purchases. Sometimes they get it right and sometimes their recommendations are downright unusual. Most of the time I don’t even open up the email. For some reason, today I did and it gave me a chuckle because this “Thanksgiving Essential” was at the top of the page – Avery menu cards. Ha! Does a family meal really need a menu card?! A) – You’ll get what I serve you! And B) – it’s Thanksgiving…doesn’t most of America have the same things every Thanksgiving? It’s the one meal a year that doesn’t need a menu. Maybe Amazon thinks I’m in the restaurant business; then you’d need a menu.
My Thanksgiving essentials are being with people I love, turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing, gravy and cranberry sauce. And maybe Pillsbury Crescent Rolls. And pie – pumpkin and apple. Everything after that is frivolous – the sweet potatoes, stuffed mushroom caps, string bean casserole. And by the way, frivolity is encouraged.
Aside from the food, there must be the parade on TV in the morning, football in the afternoon and Miracle on 34th Street somewhere along the way. Santa has to arrive, you know. But who am I kidding? Santa was already at the mall doing pictures with kids last weekend. I thought merchandisers were only decorating early; I didn’t know that Santa was getting a head-start too. Maybe the North Pole has to ramp up just like Amazon.
