Yesterday I biked 40 miles along the Delaware River on the canal path. It’s a great choice for super-hot days because most of the time the path is under deep canopy. Going out early, there is little action on the river, but returning back to my starting point, the river is speckled with colorful dots for miles – all sorts of floating tubes, rafts and kayaks. The laughter and noises of people having fun can be heard from the path and it keeps me distracted from my tired legs and sore butt. It’s such a happy Sunday noise.
When I sat down to read the paper after I got home, my eyes were drawn right away to the rafting picture below. And then I read the story with it: Scores dead or missing after flash flood sweeps through northern region. On the other side of the world, torrential rains in China triggered landslides and flash floods, killing 154 so far, with an additional 124 missing. There were no happy noises coming from those rafts. Sobering. Same planet, different worlds.
