If the little voice in your head said, “cantaloupe’, we are on the same page. The question is, why are we both now thinking about cantaloupes? Well, it’s Shop Rite’s fault. On SuperBowl Sunday they had a huge display of them right inside the front door and I’ve been thinking about them ever since. I almost went over and picked one up because they looked so good, but living alone I can only buy so much fresh produce at once and I had other fruit in mind. I still wonder where cantaloupes come from in February.
Did you know that cantaloupes were cultivated in Cantaluppi, Italy? Not only is cantaloupe a silly word, but it’s fun saying its hometown out loud too. Cantaloupes are not on the often-cited “superfoods” list, but are great nutritionally-speaking. At least until I sprinkle mine with a little salt. Family thing I picked up from my grandmother. Salt on fruit just seems wrong, right? Unless you consider tomatoes – which are technically a fruit and it’s normal to put a little salt on them. Except she sprinkled a little sugar on her tomatoes. But back to cantaloupes…the other family cantaloupe story is that my mother used to make cantaloupe ice cream in the summer. It was very refreshing and you can’t find it at Shop Rite.
OK, that's probably the last time I'll ever blog about cantaloupes, or quite possibly, the first time anyone has.
