I hate liars, but I have to give credit where credit is due...some people are phenomenal liars and like them or not, we might be able to admire their creativity. Like the parent trying get his kid to eat vegetables who says, "It's not red cabbage -- it's purple spaghetti." That's great. A smart liar....and a harmless lie to someone who can't tell the difference. Stupid liars think they're being creative and convincing -- most ex-husbands fall into this group -- seriously underestimating their Phi Beta Kappa wives. But I diverge.
My hypothesis is that if you can lie (and I think everyone can), you are already creative. Yet so many people say or believe that they are not creative. Everyone thinks I'm very creative. So do I. I might make it look easy, but it doesn't just flow out of me like water from a tap. I work at it. It's a choice. It's my intention to live creatively. In fact, last year, when asked to identify my life mission, I came up with this: "Be creative and make someone's life better with it." I take my gift in this life and try to use it for noble ends.
The way you become creative is by letting go any care you have for how others react. For someone who in fact cares too much what others think, I can be remarkably silly in situations or places where it can be frowned on. I am certainly a round peg in a square hole at work...but I've inured myself to my colleagues gradually and deliberately over time. So now they tolerate my quirkiness and radical ideas with good humor and occasional admiration. Love this Einstein quote:
"Creativity is intelligence having fun."
