Don’t you love a gift that makes you exclaim, “It’s perfect!!”? I love it when someone so totally gets me that they nail their gifts. I am touched by someone who has listened to my random chatter or paid attention to my smallest interest, and turned it into a surprise perfect gift. Similarly, I like the challenge of finding the perfect gift for someone else. And then I can’t stand it until they open their gift!
I try to be a great gift-giver, but I don’t always nail it. And when I don’t, I kinda know it in advance. Usually it’s because I don’t spend enough time anymore with the person to secretly capture a good idea. But I never give a gift card. Sorry, but to me, gift cards say, “I don’t really know you nor do I want to invest the time to find a good gift for you.” I know some people think a gift card is the ultimate – now-you-can-get-what-you-really-want thoughtful gift. But they’ve passed the buck to you to shop for your own gift.
I’d rather take my chances with something you’ve picked out for me. Maybe you made an awesome pick; maybe it looks like a strange re-gift. I express delight for all. You wanted to give me a gift? That alone is a good thing to be thankful for.
