I like having a reason to run. I don’t enjoy it enough on its own merit so distractions are good. That means even though I love the quiet sounds of nature, running is the one time I use and iPod. It’s discouraging to hear myself gasping for air; I never learned to nose-breathe while running.
Most of my running is in downtown New Brunswick – through the Rutgers campus and its surrounds. This provides good entertainment, especially in the spring when the kids move out. The garbage put out at the curb is fascinating. I expect some college-kid-crappy furniture, but they also put out “good stuff” that they don’t want to move. Those things don’t last long because there are pickers circulating. You can tell a college kid house from a normal resident any time of the year. They lack grass and have recyclables and mail flyers all over the place. They have indoor furniture on the front porch and unusual window treatments. I feel bad for the not-college residents; they must battle the garbage and mayhem daily.
One last source of distraction while I run…I watch the ground for money. Believe it or not, I find some just about every day. Usually coins. I’ll bend over for pennies, but a few times I’ve found bills. I think ‘found money’ is lucky, so when I’ve found $1 worth, I go spend it on a scratch-off ticket. No end to the things that amuse me!
