I stood in for my boss today at a meeting with her boss. It was a large group of her peers, some of which I knew; many I had not met previously. It was not a terribly exciting meeting – just a second quarter performance review. Our dashboard is all green, so my story was an easy one to tell. With a management dashboard, the eyes (and thereby the attention) go to the reds – representing missed or behind goals. Reds need much more ‘splaining.
As part of these meetings, there are always a couple “deep dive” topics. Today there was one on cyber security from our CSO – Chief Security Officer. She is the point of this blog. Not only was our CSO a woman in a high-level IT position, but I’d guess she was also late 50’s or early 60’s. How cool is that? A grey haired female is a technology leader in 2017! I was impressed. It would be interesting to hear her background, but clearly, she ‘learned’ herself into this field and earned this responsible position.
She scared the pants off everyone with her stories. Cyber-security threats are daily and scary. Over 75% of the health care industry has been infected with malware over last year. Phishing and ransomware are rampant and it turns out some of the biggest threats come from your own employees…insiders! I left the meeting not wanting to turn on my computer. By the way, if you want to study something with a wide open job market, cybersecurity is it.
