Today I was in the presence of a very tender heart. I didn't know the young man with the backpack, comfy clothes and shaggy hair and I might never have even noticed him but for one thing... he was picking up a piece of bread from the street with his bare hand (ew!) which he then dropped back on the sidewalk. And then I saw why. A pigeon had been trying to feast on it while it was in the street -- a street busy with traffic in front of the train station. This young man was protecting a pigeon... a bird arguably very capable of avoiding cars. Pretty sweet, huh? Now that's a good heart.
The very best heart I have known in my lifetime belongs to one of my stepsons. It has been my great benefit to have gotten to know him in this lifetime. He taught me what an open heart really is. He's not a perfect human being, but his love is pure. His father shattered my heart for a while, but my desire to be like my stepson is strong, so my heart didn't close. Don't you love how children can teach parents? Amazing really.
Years ago I bought a piece of art called, "Hearts I Have Known." It was a framed paper sculpture of multiple, different paper hearts. I got the artist to customize it for me by describing three people that were special to me, and she made symbolic hearts for each of them. I thought this was such a cool idea -- expressing hearts symbolically.
