I don’t mind having my picture taken. I don’t often like myself in photos, but I think photos are both important and fun. So when one is aimed my way, I make the best of it. I don’t know anyone who doesn’t look better dressed in a smile, so I plant a big one on. In general, I think camera phones have made it almost impossible to be camera-shy; they are just too much a part of our daily lives.
I have a lifelong friend I nicknamed Calvin after the Calvin and Hobbes cartoon shown here. Back in the dark ages of film, I discovered him making faces while I was taking pre-historic selfies by actually holding my camera backwards and guessing on the aim. That wasn’t the only way he was like Calvin. I was Hobbes to his Calvin and it was, and is, a dear friendship. He’s one of the most fun people I know. And we both never got over the end of that comic strip.

I did a 5K race this past weekend. Most races have one or more photographers and I have a picture strategy. First rule, your number absolutely has to be on the front of your shirt so you can more easily find your pictures after the race. Second, you have to stay separated from other people as best you can. It gives the photographer just one target. And third, when you spot the photographer, no matter how tired you feel, perk up and ham for the camera. Look like you are having fun because remember you chose to do this.
