I’m going to be slow on the uptake of online food shopping – just another habit that screams ‘old dog’ I suspect. I actually like shopping in person because I shop at odd hours, the aisles aren’t too crowded and I rarely have to wait to check out. If those parts are OK, the rest is just fun – seeing what’s new in the food world and being inspired to cook. It’s a vast warehouse of endless possibilities. Probably too many – I read that sales increase when there are fewer choices. With too many choices we get overwhelmed and make no choice. I have even been known to explore out of town food stores when travelling.
Even though I like seeing new things, I only rarely come home with something new. Probably like most people, I have go-to meals for the work week and I just restock ingredients I need. This weekend I roasted a chicken. That was a big deal for me. I roasted vegies with it and by the time I ate and cleaned up I wondered how our mothers made full meals every night for their families. I felt like I was in the kitchen for hours. I’ll kill time in a grocery store, but I’m less willing spend hours on food prep.
Online shopping requires an element of trust – that the person picking out my avocados and lettuce would be as careful as I am. If they are the same workers that check me out and bag me then I think not. My carefully selected bananas get dropped on the belt after running across the scanner and the bread gets smushed under a can. So for now, I’ll food shop in person thank you very much.
