Finally found a good photo of the treehouse I grew up playing in. My Dad built this and my Mom painted it as I recall. Our A-frame treehouse in this willow tree was the coolest thing in the neighborhood; another way for my parents to always know where we were and who we were playing with. What kid doesn't want that "secret" clubhouse to escape to? My memories are primarily of having lunch and picnics out there and running away screaming like a girl whenever bees came by. I read and colored up there; it was a great place for hide and seek or home base...we ran up and down those stairs all day long.
My parents made sure we didn't even want to watch TV by providing so many sources of entertainment outside. We had sports equipment, everything from baseballs and bats, to a tire swing, to a volleyball net -- a Slip 'n Slide (another bee screamer), the sandbox...if it wasn't a game or toy we knew, we were making them up. Those days were so long. It had the secondary purpose of taking our energy down a notch.
Today, treehouses are big business again. There is even a cable TV program about building them...regular houses with electricity and plumbing. But I would like another rustic treehouse with no amenities... just a peaceful place to go hang out high up with the hawks. I'd read or make it my art studio. Or just enjoy nature.
It was a sad day when, for safety, the treehouse had to come done and not long after that, the willow tree fell over. Always liked willow trees since then too.
