Biking is great exercise, but really, I'm just twirling my feet in circles while my butt sits (more or less comfortably) in a seat. So it's possible to have highly toned and strong legs, but not much else. The rest of your muscles don't do that much while riding (unless you're doing hills or mountain biking). So even though I'm spending lots of time biking, I still go to the gym 5 mornings a week and cross-train. Could be the elliptical, a walk, shooting baskets, weightlifting... Today, the cross-train du jour was driveway sealing. :) I've only been trying to get it done since last year. My brother came and helped (it's definitely a 2-person job) and we worked for 5 hours...cleaning the driveway first and then sealing it using long-handled paint rollers. Did I mention it was in a humid, sunny 90+ degrees? Good hands/arms/ shoulders/back workout... and calfs too. They feel a bit tight from standing on my steep hill of a driveway. Got a blister on one of my thumbs. Should have put gloves on sooner, but it was so hot. And surprisingly, although we were up by 6am and it's now nearly 7pm, I haven't taken a nap! All things being equal (no overnight sore muscles setting in) I hope to do about 20 miles on my bike tomorrow.
The driveway, thanks for asking, turned out pretty good. It was long overdue and I can't believe how much it refreshes the curb appeal of my house. I don't think either my brother or I want to do it for a living; it was first time for both of us. We learned as we went. You develop more technique and better results as you go. Even so, it very hard to maintain a wet edge where my driveway opens up to a ~250ft squared 'ski bowl'. I suppose we could have done a second coat to even out those effects, but really, I was pretty content with the outcome.
