I know when I’m leaving on my trip and what direction I’m heading -- Pittsburg to DC (West to East). Read lots of opinions about which way is better and concluded that both are nice/fine. Going towards DC is mostly downhill at the end because of canal locks, but it’s purportedly the roughest part of the ride too. I know how I’m getting to Pittsburgh (train) and what I’m doing with my car. But figuring out the towns to overnight in is taking some time. It’s a Rubik’s Cube of distance, sights and available lodging. Combined with some procrastination and indecisiveness, my act is not together yet. (Work is cramping my ability to think about biking 24/7 too!) I have discovered some tour schedules recommended by others, and these are helpful to look at, but many are based on campsites or one week timeframes for the whole ride. There are places that might make good stopping points distance-wise (like the Paw-Paw Tunnel), but there is no nearby lodging. So that becomes either a short-ride day or a very-long-ride day. Of course, there are plenty of tour planners who would be happy to make a plan based on my requirements. But if I could articulate them, I could make them, and then why would I pay for that?! Sooner or later, I have to stop researching and reading… I keep gathering information. It’s hard to pick/choose from the many trail highlights and still allow time for the side journey/whim to explore a town. I promised myself I would have my trip mapped out this past weekend and that didn’t work out so well. Mentally side-tracked thinking about bears and snakes. This coming weekend for sure.
